The
coastal soils of the country are highly
under-utilized with very low production
level and poor intensity of crops. The major
causes of poor crop production on salt-affected
coastal soils are: high soil salinity; lack
of good quality irrigation water, low efficiency
of plant nutrients

and poor nutrient management practices and
non-availability of suitable crop varieties
to suit the soil and climatic conditions
of the area. The regional research station,
Canning Town is the oldest research center
which was established in 1958 to undertake
basic and applied research on coastal saline
rice under the aegis of Central Rice Research
Institute, Cuttack, which moved to CSSRI
fold in 1969 with following research mandate:
|
To
undertake basic and applied research
for developing strategies of salinity
control, reclamation and management
of coastal salt affected soils. |
|
To
act as a repository of information on
the nature and extent of salt affected
soils and poor quality water in the
coastal region. |
|
To
undertake research on improved salt
tolerant varieties and cropping systems. |
|
To
collaborate relevant national and international
agencies for achieving the above goals. |
|
To
develop cost-effective alternate farming
system as well as integrated nutrient
package through holistic approach. |
|
To
develop appropriate management of water
resources and agricultural drainage
for sustainable crop production. |
|
To
develop cost effective integrated nutrient
package. |
As
a part of strategy for development
of reclamation and management packages,
saline and acid soils in parts of
coastal West Bengal and Orissa have
been characterized. For coastal salinity
CSR1, CSR 2 and CSR 3 were identified
as salt tolerant rice genotypes and
CSR4 and CSR 6 were released at the
zonal level. An economically viable
package on rainwater harvesting in
dugout farm ponds and its judicious
use for multiple cropping was also
evaluated. Further a crop calendar
has been developed which permits best
utilization of rainwater and minimizing
yield losses as result of heavy storms. |
